Night Photography Class – How it all started

Night Photography Class – How it all started

Randomly, although I’d been wanting to for years, it wasn’t until this year that an opportunity to learn Night Photography presented itself.

Back in April, I joined a group on FB: Great Lakes Aurora Hunters. I knew I wanted to see the Aurora and I figured the FB group was a great place to start.

Because of the pandemic, people’s livelihoods were affected but not only that, the world made it easier to meet virtually and because of this Maureen Janson Heintz offered a great deal for an online Night Photography Class. I jumped at the opportunity.

Maureen gave us some homework and the first clear skies, I took photos. They were HORRIBLE! (Although I was excited at the time)

I was so depressed, but at this point I figured this was something I really REALLY wanted to do, so at her recommendation, I purchased a Rokinon 14mm f2.8 lens. Best. Decision. Ever. My photos were greatly improved with the wide angle and lower f stops. Of course, by this time, the Milky Way season was over…

That’s okay, because it was a busy winter and then March 23rd, 2023 came along and the opporutnity to photograph the aurora borealis.
